Nepal has been devastated by 7.8 magnitude of massive earthquake on April 25, 2015 and aftershock of 6.7 magnitude on April 26, 2015, which resulted to killing of thousands of Nepalese people, injuries to tens of thousands, and homelessness to millions. The catastrophic earthquake collapsed hundreds of thousands of homes, historical monuments as well as temples bringing fear and terror across the nation. Even hundreds of foreign tourists including Canadians were disappeared or dead due to earthquake and Mount Everest avalanche. International support teams including Canada have provided immediate rescue support and also planned permanent solution to secure earthquake survivors.
While thousands of Nepalese are fleeing to India to save their lives, earthquake has established severe risk to return for Nepalese nationals living outside of Nepal. Several countries including the United States are planning some kind of relief for Nepalese nationals allowing them to stay in their country temporarily. Canada is one of the countries who settles hundreds of thousands of immigrants every year, and thousands of Nepalese have already been settled in Canada through various immigration programs. Nevertheless, there are several Nepalese Nationals in Canada who are in risk of loosing their temporary status, such as work permit, study permit, visitor visas, etc. and several Canadian Residents of Nepalese origin have lost their family homes or even family and relatives back in Nepal. In this context, we, the petitioners, appeal Government of Canada to introduce effective immigration measures or Minister's Directions so that Nepalese nationals would have following reliefs:
- Continue to provide humanitarian support to Nepal and Nepalese people who are affected by earthquake;
- Expedite processing of Permanent Residence or Temporary Residence Visas of Nepalese Citizens and let them quickly come to Canada;
- Allow Canadians of Nepalese origin to sponsor their family members temporarily or permanently, and process their applications in urgent basis;
- Offer Temporary Resident Permits as well as open work permit to Nepalese Nationals already in Canada who are in need of such permit to continue to stay and work in Canada;
- Stop deporting refugees claimants, or temporary foreign workers whose work permit has been expired, or students whose study permit has been expired temporary workers or anybody who is from Nepal, and currently residing in Canada;
- Consider Permanent Residence Application under Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds from Nepalese Nationals who apply in Canada or abroad; and
- Provide support to Nepal in permanent basis to rebuild homes and livelihoods of earthquake victims.
We extend our gratitude to Government of Canada for taking above measures, and pray for safety of Nepalese Nationals.
